New Life Rule: Death and Memory in RP

Living Legends RP • March 2026 • 6 min read

The New Life Rule (NLR) is a fundamental roleplay mechanic that determines what happens when your character dies. Understanding NLR prevents revenge-killing and maintains fair, immersive storytelling.

What is the New Life Rule?

The New Life Rule (NLR) states that when your character dies and respawns, they forget the events immediately leading to their death. You cannot remember who killed you, where it happened, or seek revenge based on that death. It's essentially a 'soft reset' for that particular scenario.

Why NLR Exists

Without NLR, death becomes meaningless. Imagine robbing someone, only for them to respawn and immediately come back for revenge, again and again. NLR prevents endless revenge cycles and ensures consequences matter. It also protects criminals from being identified by people they killed.

What Your Character Forgets

After death, your character forgets: who attacked you, what led to the conflict, the location where you died, and any information gained in that scenario. You wake up at the hospital with no memory of the incident — like surviving a traumatic event with amnesia.

What Your Character Remembers

NLR doesn't wipe your entire memory. You remember: your job, your friends, your gang affiliation, ongoing storylines not related to your death, and general knowledge. You just can't remember this specific death or use it to continue that conflict.

NLR Timer and Zones

Many servers implement NLR timers (often 15-30 minutes) during which you cannot return to the area where you died. This prevents players from technically following NLR while still rushing back to the scene. Check your server's specific NLR rules.
